Afrobeat sensation Omah Lay recently opened up about his upbringing in Nigeria and the role his family played in his success.
In an interview on the Zach Sang Show, he reflected on his childhood, calling it “beautiful,” and acknowledged how his modest origins have contributed to his strength and individuality.
Omah Lay emphasized that his background has profoundly influenced his approach to both life and music, giving him a unique perspective.
Omah Lay described his upbringing in Nigeria as “beautiful,” despite having less at the time. “Having more now allows me to utilize my experiences and resources in ways that those who have always had more might not. I believe this background makes me exceptionally strong and unique,” he noted.
In discussing his parents’ pride, Omah Lay conveyed deep appreciation for his mother’s constant support and love.
He recognized that his mother’s trust and encouragement are a significant source of motivation for him.
“My mom is incredibly proud; she knows how much I love her, and she loves me just as much. Her love fuels me and looking back at our journey together keeps my energy alive. She believes in me and my choices, and that faith in my potential to become a great person drives me forward. It’s a powerful motivator,” he explained.
The singer also spoke about his family’s musical history, noting that his father was a drummer and his grandfather performed as a percussionist for renowned high-life musicians. He mentioned that this musical legacy has been crucial to his own path as an artist, affirming both his passion and talent.
“My dad played the drums, though not professionally he would use chairs and other objects around the house. My grandfather was a percussionist for some legendary high-life artists, and I believe this musical heritage influenced my own journey. Discovering that my grandfather was a percussionist has reinforced my belief that I was born to be a musician,” he shared.
