A prison official revealed that Bobrisky was not placed in the general cell at Kirikiri Maximum Prison due to his distinct female characteristics, such as having breasts.
Testifying before the House of Representatives investigation panel on September 30, DCC Michael Anuga stated, “During his admission, we observed that Idris had unique features that made it impossible to place him in the general population. Idris Okuneye Olanrewaju displayed female traits, including breasts.”
He further explained that a medical professional was consulted, who confirmed that Bobrisky indeed had breasts.
As a result, the prison board convened to determine the most appropriate course of action for managing his custody. After thorough deliberation, they decided to place him in protective custody. Bobrisky was housed in B-ward room 2, where he was kept alone to ensure his safety. This decision was made in compliance with international best practices and local laws governing the treatment of inmates with unique circumstances.
The prison authority’s actions highlight the challenges of accommodating individuals with non-conforming gender identities in correctional facilities, where safety and adherence to human rights are of utmost importance. The situation reflects the need for ongoing discussions about how to handle such cases within the legal and correctional system.
