Ace Nigerian music star 2Face Idibia has joined the ongoing conversation around comparisons between Afrobeat pioneer Fela Anikulapo-Kuti and global Afrobeats superstar Wizkid, and he’s not here for it at all.
Speaking during a recent episode of the Mic On Podcast, the award-winning singer described the comparison as ridiculous, noting that it does more harm than good to both artists involved.
According to 2Face, putting Fela and Wizkid side by side ignores the realities of their different eras, missions, and musical identities.
He explained that Fela Anikulapo-Kuti is a once-in-a-lifetime figure whose influence went far beyond music, shaping political consciousness, culture, and activism in Nigeria and across Africa.
Fela’s legacy, 2Face stressed, is sacred and should not be reduced to modern-day comparison debates.
At the same time, the African Queen crooner pointed out that such arguments are also unfair to Wizkid, who has built his own remarkable career in a completely different generation.
Wizkid, he said, has successfully taken Nigerian music to the global stage, earning international recognition and opening doors for Afrobeats worldwide.
“It’s disrespectful to Fela, and at the same time unfair to Wizkid,” 2Face stated, emphasizing that both artists deserve to be appreciated on their own merits rather than being pitted against each other.
The music legend concluded by encouraging fans to celebrate Nigerian music across generations without turning respect into rivalry. In his view, honoring both Fela’s timeless impact and Wizkid’s modern achievements is the best way to preserve the richness of Nigeria’s musical heritage.
