Nigerian singer Paul Okoye, popularly known as Rudeboy, has revealed that he and several of his contemporaries would likely have retired from music by now.
The 45-year-old artist noted that, in the past, musicians typically did not remain in the industry for extended periods.
In an appearance on the Adesope live show, Rudeboy discussed the challenges of balancing a family life with an active music career.
He emphasized the difficulty of managing both roles simultaneously.
“In the old ways of doing music, by now people like us suppose don retire.”
“There’s always a time for everything in life. Things will always happen. If you are a celebrity and you think people will always see you like an angel, trust me you’re not going anywhere. There are times that something would be against you. It’s always like that.
“Every top artiste has had their share of criticisms and scandals. Even the up-and-coming ones, too, will suffer the same fate someday. It’s a normal thing [in the entertainment industry]. But what matters is your personality and how you handle issues.”
Rudeboy, known for his rise to fame in the 2000s as part of the P-Square duo with his twin brother Peter Okoye, who is also known as Mr P, has had a tumultuous journey with the group. Initially, P-Square split in 2016 but made a reunion in 2021 under unclear circumstances.
However, in August 2024, during an interview with City FM, Paul Okoye, aka Rudeboy, revealed that P-Square has once again disbanded. The breakup followed allegations from his twin brother Peter, who accused Rudeboy and their older brother and former manager, Jude Okoye, of misappropriating the group’s funds.
