Nigerian music star Iyanya has opened up about how he has managed to enjoy fame and relevance in the entertainment industry for over 17 years—and according to him, it all comes down to guidance and accountability.
Speaking on a recent episode of the Afropolitan podcast, the singer shared personal lessons from his journey in the spotlight, stressing that fame without proper guidance is meaningless and short-lived.
Iyanya explained that one of the biggest mistakes young celebrities make is assuming fame alone is enough to sustain success. According to him, fame moves fast, and without people who can keep you grounded, it can easily become overwhelming.
He revealed that submitting himself to guidance early in his career helped him stay focused and avoid unnecessary distractions.
“I’ve been able to maintain fame positively for 17 years because of guidance,” he said.
Why Celebrities Need Guardianship
The singer noted that every entertainer needs at least one to three trusted people in their life who can offer honest advice and moral support. These people help provide balance when everything around starts happening too fast.
Iyanya also advised his younger self and upcoming artists not to take things too personally, explaining that fame can create an illusion of importance that isn’t always real.
Fame Is Temporary, Guidance Is Not
Using a powerful example, Iyanya pointed out how fame can open doors quickly but doesn’t guarantee lasting recognition.
He explained that a public figure may meet top leaders, including presidents who know their name and sing their songs at the height of their career. However, once the fame fades, those same people may no longer remember them.
According to him, this reality is why artists must stay humble and grounded.
Advice to Young Artists and Celebrities
Iyanya encouraged fellow celebrities to willingly submit themselves to guidance and listen to the people who genuinely care about them. He emphasized that having trusted voices around helps provide clarity, direction, and emotional support at every stage of life.
He added that guidance is not a sign of weakness but a necessary tool for long-term success and personal growth
Iyanya’s story highlights an important lesson for anyone chasing success: fame may come quickly, but guidance keeps you sane, focused, and relevant. His journey serves as a reminder that lasting success isn’t just about talent—it’s also about discipline, humility, and the right people around you.
