A Nigerian man recounted how his relationship was ruined by genotype incompatibility after he and his partner, both deeply in love, discovered they were both carriers of the sickle cell trait (AS genotype).
Despite their strong bond, they chose to end the relationship to avoid the 25% risk with each pregnancy of having a child with sickle cell disease (SS genotype), underscoring the emotional and social challenges posed by genetic compatibility concerns in Nigerian relationships.

On a faithful day, I went to the hospital for normal checkup and I decided to take a genotype test just to have the test result cause I was very sure I was an AA(based on the test i did while I was still young
To my greatest surprise when the result came out I’m an AS and she is too
We couldn’t let each other go as at that time. We tried but it was so hard for us. We dated for two years more hoping we would be able to figure it out in the future.
On the 5th year we we decided to end it all and let each other go, after seeking advice from different medical practitioners
I broke down Never knew heart break could hurt like this Emi omo li le I con Dey cry like baby. Believe me, I’m not emotionally fragile but this thing really hurts.

My candid advice to you young lovers who intend to get married is to get your genotype checked from different hospitals.
After several months I finally let go of the past
I’m completely healed, hopefully, someday I will get a better replacement and if not a better one, at least someone who will love me for who I am.
