Court has officially selected three international facilities where a DNA test will be conducted for Liam, the son of late Nigerian singer Mohbad, as the long-running paternity dispute continues

Since the tragic passing of Mohbad in 2023, conversations surrounding the paternity of his son have remained a sensitive and highly debated issue between his family and his widow, Wunmi Adebanjo.

Court Selects DNA Testing Centres Abroad

At a court sitting in Lagos on Tuesday, December 24, the judge approved three accredited facilities to handle the DNA testing process. Two of the selected laboratories are located in the United Kingdom, while one is based in the United States.

According to reports presented in court, each party was given the opportunity to nominate a facility. One laboratory was chosen by Mohbad’s father (popularly known as Baba Mohbad), another was nominated by Wunmi, while the third option was independently selected by the court to ensure fairness and transparency.

The case has now been adjourned until April 7, 2026, for further proceedings.

Transparent Process Ordered by the Court

To avoid further controversy, the court directed that DNA samples must be collected in the presence of all involved parties. Additionally, strict monitoring will be put in place during the shipment of samples overseas to prevent tampering or irregularities.

This development marks another major step in a legal matter that has attracted significant public attention since the singer’s death.

How the DNA Dispute Began

Shortly after Mohbad’s passing in 2023, public calls intensified for a DNA test to determine Liam’s paternity. The late singer’s father was among those who openly requested the test, stating that clarity was necessary for legal and inheritance purposes.

In September, a Magistrate Court sitting in Ikorodu, Lagos State, ordered that a DNA test be carried out. The application was filed by Mohbad’s father through his legal representatives, who argued that establishing paternity was important for the child’s welfare and for any financial responsibilities connected to maintenance.

Wunmi Adebanjo, through her lawyer, did not oppose the request at the time, and the court subsequently granted the order.

Family Name Controversy

Following the court’s decision, members of Mohbad’s family reportedly instructed Wunmi to stop using their family surname in both public and private records until the DNA test confirms paternity. They maintained that no statutory or traditional marriage was formally conducted between Mohbad and Wunmi.

However, Wunmi’s lawyer, Kabir Akingbolu, strongly criticized the directive. He described the move as emotional and unlawful, accusing the Aloba family of delaying the DNA process despite court orders.

Estate and Property Protection

Amid the ongoing dispute, Wunmi also initiated legal steps to protect the late singer’s estate. Her legal team sought to prevent any unauthorized individuals from laying claim to Mohbad’s assets while the paternity issue remains unresolved.

In a recorded statement that later surfaced online, Mohbad’s father questioned details surrounding the alleged marriage, including who received Wunmi’s bride price. He insisted that no traditional wedding ceremony took place and alleged that the singer had intended to formalize the union but later changed his mind over personal concerns.

According to him, these unresolved issues ultimately led to his insistence on conducting a DNA test to confirm Liam’s biological relationship to his late son.

What Happens Next?

With three international facilities now selected and strict supervision ordered by the court, attention will turn to the upcoming hearing scheduled for April 7, 2026. Many observers hope the DNA process will finally provide clarity and bring an end to the prolonged family dispute.

As the case unfolds, it continues to highlight the legal and emotional complexities surrounding paternity, inheritance rights, and family recognition after the death of a public figure.
