Veteran entertainer and social activist Charles Oputa, widely known as Charly Boy, has taken a swipe at Nigerian Christian clerics, accusing many of prioritising profit over moral responsibility.
Speaking during a recent episode of the KAA Truths podcast, the outspoken singer—popularly called Area Fada—expressed deep disappointment with what he described as the silence of many pastors amid Nigeria’s worsening economic hardship and security challenges.
According to Charly Boy, a large number of church leaders have failed to speak truth to power, choosing instead to align with corrupt politicians while ordinary Nigerians continue to suffer.
He alleged that many churches are being run purely as businesses rather than spiritual institutions meant to guide and protect the people.
“All the pastors I know in Nigeria, 99 per cent of them are useless. It’s just a business they are running,” he said during the podcast.
The controversial musician further distanced himself from what he described as the general mindset of most Nigerians, stating that he refuses to be influenced by religious manipulation or hypocrisy.
“I may live in Nigeria, but Nigeria does not live in me. I don’t think like you, I don’t believe like you people. I come from a different space and time,” he added.
Charly Boy’s comments have since sparked conversations online, with many Nigerians divided over his blunt criticism of religious leaders and the role of churches in national development.
