Chidimma Adetshina, a contestant in the Miss South Africa pageant, has withdrawn from the competition, citing concerns for her and her family’s safety and wellbeing.

Gistme9ja notes that the pageant has been mired in controversy recently, following allegations of fraud and identity theft against Chidimma’s mother by the government.

As a result, Chidimma, 23, has faced hostile and xenophobic attacks on social media since being announced as a finalist in the competition in July.

Her credentials were questioned by many, including cabinet ministers.

The controversy prompted an investigation into her citizenship by the Home Affairs Ministry, following a request from the pageant’s organizers.

The investigation revealed “prima facie indications” that Chidimma’s mother may have committed fraud and stolen the identity of a South African woman after Chidimma’s birth, the ministry reported on Wednesday.

In an Instagram post, Chidimma expressed that while withdrawing from the pageant was a difficult decision, her family’s safety is her top priority.

She wrote, “I want to start by thanking everyone who has supported me throughout my Miss South Africa journey. I’m deeply grateful for all the love and encouragement I have received.”

“Being part of the Miss South Africa 2024 competition has been an incredible journey. However, after careful consideration, I have made the difficult decision to withdraw to ensure the safety and wellbeing of my family and myself.

“With the support of the Miss South Africa Organization, I leave with deep gratitude for this amazing experience.

“I would also like to extend my best wishes to my fellow finalists for the rest of the competition. The crown will represent us all.”
