Why I Was Disappointed With What a Staff Said to Me in Airport – Ayra Starr
Nigerian singer Ayra Starr is gaining international recognition with the release of her sophomore album, “The Year I Turned 21.” As she promotes her new work, her rising fame brings both opportunities and challenges. In a recent interview with MTV Base, Ayra Starr discussed her new album and shared an incident at the airport that highlighted some of the downsides of fame. Here are some excerpts from the interview.
Talking about her favorite tracks from “The Year I Turned 21,” the challenges she faced while creating the album, and her collaborations, Ayra Starr said:
“I feel like right now, my favorites are between ‘Birds Sing of Money’, ’21’, and ‘Orun’. ‘The Kids Are Alright’ was one of the hardest to do because it was a very emotional session and everybody was so emotional, because the song is about loss and losing a loved one. For collaborations, I just wanted people that I would sound sonically amazing with. And all these artists on the album, I love their music and I was like okay, let’s try. Like, working with Seyi Vibez was amazing. I knew sonically, we would sound good and it came out just how I heard it in my head.”
She also recounted a reality check about fame she experienced at the airport:
“There is no such thing as privacy, trust me. Even when you want it to be private. Something happened the other day when I was in the airport. The staff stopped me to check my bag, and then as they were checking us, the staff there was like ‘can I take a selfie?’ I looked at him with so much disappointment. I was like really? I told him ‘sorry, I just woke up,’ and he said ‘it doesn’t matter.’ I said ‘Please please please!’ He was now like ‘Ah okay, why are you shouting, Ayra Starr?’ I was like oh, no. There’s no such thing as privacy.”
