Governor Godwin Obaseki of Edo State has shared the deeply personal reason behind his decision to rename the 6,000-capacity Edo Arena as the Rema Dome, honoring the acclaimed Benin-born artist Divine Ikubor, better known as Rema.
At a groundbreaking ceremony in Benin City on Wednesday, Rema joined the governor to lay the first stone for the newly named venue.
This significant event marks the start of preparations for Rema’s eagerly awaited homecoming concert at Ogbe Stadium, which is set to captivate both his fans and the city of Benin.
Obaseki highlighted that the Rema Dome would not only symbolize pride for the people of Edo but also attract international stars and visitors, thereby boosting tourism and drawing global attention to the state.
He elaborated that the rebranded arena is set to become a central point for visitors to experience Edo State’s rich cultural heritage and exceptional hospitality.
The governor underscored that this name change is more than symbolic; it’s a strategic effort to elevate the state’s status as a tourism destination, attract investments, and generate valuable job opportunities for Edo’s youth.
Governor Obaseki reiterated his administration’s strong dedication to promoting growth through enhanced tourism, aiming to make Edo State a top destination for visitors both from within Nigeria and abroad.
On his X account on Wednesday, the Governor shared, “I was thrilled to have the global music sensation @heisrema with me for the groundbreaking of the 6,000-seat Edo Arena. This venue, to be named ‘Rema’s Dome,’ will be situated at the former Garrick Memorial School Ground on Ekenhuan Road in Benin City.”
