Issa Hayatou, the former president of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), has passed away.
According to Straitstimes.com, Hayatou died on Thursday after a prolonged illness, just one day before his 78th birthday.
Hayatou led CAF for 29 years, from 1988 to 2017, and served as acting FIFA president from 2015 to 2016 during Sepp Blatter’s suspension.
In 2011, he faced sanctions from the International Olympic Committee (IOC) related to an alleged bribery case involving FIFA, accused of accepting approximately $20,000 from the sports marketing firm ISL in 1995.
Hayatou claimed the funds were intended as a gift for his confederation.
