Nigerian Afrobeats sensation Rema has opened up about his unusual pre-show routine, revealing how he mentally and physically prepares before stepping on stage for his electrifying performances.

In a recent conversation with Dazed during Milan Fashion Week, where he made a runway appearance for Diesel, the “Calm Down” hitmaker gave fans a glimpse into what goes on behind the scenes before a live show.

Rema’s Pre-Performance Ritual

According to the award-winning artist, his preparation involves a combination of relaxation, focus, and spiritual grounding.

“A little tequila, a little cigarette, pray, tap in with the team and make sure everything is on cue,” he shared.

While some fans may find the routine surprising, Rema explained that performing live requires intense preparation. Unlike walking the runway, which he described as less demanding, delivering a high-energy stage performance takes breath control, stamina, and the ability to maintain a strong connection with the audience from start to finish.

Although walking at Milan Fashion Week was a major moment in his career, Rema admitted that performing music on stage comes with greater pressure. Managing breathwork while dancing and keeping the crowd fully engaged demands both physical endurance and mental focus.

Known for his energetic stage presence, Rema understands the importance of staying in rhythm — not just musically, but emotionally with his fans. For him, preparation is about ensuring that every detail is aligned before the spotlight turns on.

Inspired by Sudanese Cultural Sounds

The Afrobeats star also revealed that he has been drawing creative inspiration from Sudanese cultural live music. Exploring different African sounds has become part of his artistic evolution, influencing how he approaches live performances and overall musical expression.

By blending diverse African influences into his craft, Rema continues to expand his sound while maintaining the vibrant energy that has earned him a global fan base.

Smoking Is My Biggest Vice

During the interview, Rema candidly admitted that smoking cigarettes remains his biggest weakness. His honesty about his habits sparked mixed reactions online. While many fans appreciated his openness, others jokingly reacted to his mention of tequila as part of his pre-show ritual.

Despite the playful criticism, supporters praised his transparency and dedication to his craft.

Rema on Love and Relationships

Beyond music and fashion, Rema has previously shared his thoughts on relationships. In an earlier interview, he stated that he prefers stylish women over wealthy ones, explaining that financial status is not a priority for him since he is already financially secure.

His comments once again showcased his confidence and self-awareness — qualities that have become part of his public persona.

From walking international runways to delivering unforgettable live shows, Rema continues to prove that preparation and authenticity are key to his success.

Whether it’s prayer, team coordination, or managing stage energy, the Afrobeats star remains intentional about how he shows up for his fans.

As his global influence continues to grow, fans can expect even more evolution in both his music and performance style.

What albums have you got on repeat this year so far?
