Gospel singer Mercy Chinwo has filed a lawsuit against social media critic VeryDarkMan (VDM) for allegedly defaming her character. The lawsuit, which was filed on March 3, seeks N1.1 billion in damages.

The controversy began when VDM made a series of Instagram posts accusing Chinwo of withholding earnings from her performances and failing to remit them to her former record label, EeZee Concept. VDM also claimed that Chinwo had violated contractual agreements before parting ways with the label.

However, Chinwo’s lawyer, Pelumi Olajengbesi, has dismissed VDM’s claims as “libelous, malicious, and damaging.” Olajengbesi stated that VDM was not personally involved in the dispute between Chinwo and her former record label, but still chose to make damaging statements that tarnished the singer’s reputation.

Chinwo is seeking N1 billion in general damages, N100 million in punitive and aggravated damages, and N25 million to cover legal expenses. She is also demanding that VDM delete the alleged defamatory posts, issue a public apology, and publish retractions in four national newspapers for 14 consecutive days.

The dispute between Chinwo and EeZee Concept began over financial disagreements following her departure from the label. Chinwo had accused the label’s owner, EeZee Tee, of mismanaging approximately $345,000 from her digital platforms and events without proper disclosure or remittance.

The case has sparked a heated debate in the music industry, with many fans coming out in support of Chinwo. The lawsuit is a clear indication that Chinwo will not take the allegations lying down and is determined to clear her name.
