Prominent dancehall artist Patrick Nnaemeka Okorie, better known as Patoranking, recently opened up about his humble beginnings selling goods on the streets of Lagos alongside his father.
Despite growing up in the slums of Ebute Metta, Patoranking remained resolute, overcoming numerous challenges to realize his dreams.
These revelations came as Patoranking accepted his appointment as the UNDP Goodwill Ambassador for Youth Innovation, Enterprise, and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in Africa. Reflecting on his past, he shared:
“I used to hawk on the streets of Lagos with my father. Many years ago, I sold goods on Kings Way road, which was a bustling trading hub. Now, I have become the man I once dreamed of being. Driving down this road today was emotional for me, as it brought back memories of my journey.”
Patoranking also urged young people to harness their talents for the betterment of their communities and the African continent. He elaborated:
“This is why I collaborate with artists from Uganda, Kenya, Ghana, and beyond. As the UNDP Goodwill Africa Ambassador for Youth Innovation, Enterprise, and the SDGs, I am not just an artist—I am a voice for many African youths striving to make a difference in their communities.”
Patoranking’s story is a powerful reminder of how perseverance and dedication can lead to significant achievements, inspiring countless young Africans to pursue their goals against all odds.
