Nigerian actress Ufuoma McDermott recently shared her experience with chronic kidney disease and the role painkiller dependency played in her health struggles. In an interview with Chude, Ufuoma explained that what began as an occasional remedy for headaches and migraines gradually escalated, ultimately leading to serious health issues.

She described how her approach to pain management changed over time, reflecting on the questions she now asks herself before reaching for medication. “I ask myself, ‘Have you rested? Have you eaten? Are you hydrated? Are you in a healthy environment?’ I’ve become almost like my own health advocate because I’ve seen firsthand the consequences of relying too much on medication.”

Ufuoma also discussed advice from her doctor, who pointed out that her health issues were not purely genetic. Growing up in the same environment as her brother, she adopted similar behaviors and routines around pain management, including frequent painkiller use. Reflecting on her younger years, she recalled how even as a boarding school student, she kept painkillers readily available, unaware that her casual use was leading to drug dependency.

Through her story, Ufuoma hopes to raise awareness about the potential dangers of unmonitored painkiller use and the importance of seeking alternative ways to manage pain.
