Nigeria in shock as Government Pays NYSC Corps Members N33,000, weeks after Federal Government approved the increase of corps members’ monthly allowance to N77,000 with effect from July 2024.

The Nigerian government, under the leadership of President Bola Tinubu, surprised many by paying National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members their previous monthly allowance of N33,000 for September, despite the recent approval to increase the stipend to N77,000. This decision has caused disappointment among corps members, as revealed through telephone interviews with several of them.

The Federal Government had earlier announced an official increase in the NYSC monthly allowance, raising it from N33,000 to N77,000 in accordance with the National Minimum Wage (Amendment) Act 2024, effective from July 2024. NYSC Director General, Brigadier General YD Ahmed, had even thanked the government for the increase, noting that it would provide financial relief and improve morale among corps members.

Despite this, the delay in implementing the new allowance has raised concerns, as many corps members were expecting to receive the higher payment for September. As of the most recent reports, some corps members were yet to receive their allowance, while those who did were credited with the old amount of N33,000.

One corps member shared, “They have not paid me yet, but those around me who were paid received 33k (N33,000) instead of the N77,000 that was promised.”

This situation has sparked a wider debate on the implementation of government policies and how effectively they are communicated and rolled out. Many corps members and citizens alike are questioning the reasons behind the delay, especially after the initial announcement raised their expectations. The lack of clarity surrounding the matter has left many uncertain about when the new allowance will actually take effect.
